Historic Marker Unveiling: Neighborhood Story Project, Gray, TN

August 8 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am CDT

The McKinney Center and Holston Valley Unitarian Universalist Church invite you to join us for a special, Historic Marker Dedication on Emancipation Day, August 8, 2024, at the Unitarian Universalist Church.

Members of the community, funded by a Neighborhood Story Project grant from Humanities Tennessee, researched the Ford vs. Ford court case. Their research resulted in the marker “Freed African Americans Win First Inheritance Suit.” This pivotal case resulted in the five, enslaved children of Lloyd Ford, Jr. winning their freedom and the property that was left to them in their father’s will. This court case was an important moment in Washington County’s history, the history of the state and the history of the country.

There will be an unveiling ceremony at the marker followed by a small reception at the church.
