Parker's Crossroads Battlefield Association, Parker's Crossroads
Forrest's First West Tennessee Campaign, December 1862, features a lecture by Dr. Lonnie E. Maness relating General Nathan Bedford Forrest's first West Tennessee campaign to the events of the Battle of Parker's Crossroads. The lecture will be followed by a discussion and tour of the battlefield.
Dyersburg State Community College, Dyersburg
Conflict and Triumph of the Human Spirit in the 1930s and 1940s — the title of the 2010 Dyersburg book festival — will examine conditions and culture prevalent in Depression Era Dyer County and West Tennessee. The program features lecture/discussion and covers a range of topics grounded in the humanities, including New Deal programs, the rise of Jazz and Blues, and the literature of William Faulkner and Zora Neal Hurston. The event occurs March 1-4, 2010.
Ocoee Region Multicultural Services, Cleveland
Building Community from Diversity is a one-day forum in which the general public will discuss the interests and concerns of the Ocoee region's growing diversity. Panelists from a range of civic perspectives will be guided by humanities-based questions of pluralism and identity politics. The forum will occur in Cleveland, Tennessee, in early 2010.
Southern Appalachian International Film Festival, Erwin
Stark Love and the Portrayal of Appalachia in Early Cinema includes a free public screening of the 1926 silent film, Stark Love, accompanied by a live organist and followed by film maker John White's presetation of his documentary about the making of Stark Love. Lastly, a panel discussion will address the portrayal of Appalachia in early media. The event occurs at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, Tennessee, on Thursday, October 22nd at 6:30pm.
Global Education Center, Nashville
Between Earth and Sky: Exploring Native American Culture through the Poetry of Joy Harjo explores Native American culture through the literature of poet/scholar Joy Harjo, who will read and discuss her work in Nashville with students at the Cohen Alternative High School and the the general public at the WO Smith Community Music School, April 23, 2010.
East Tennessee Historical Society, Knoxville
History at Home: Drive in Summer Seminars consists of four two-day workshops featuring Tennessee history and introducing local history to K-12 educators. The programs will occur at four museums in summer of 2010 across East Tennessee, at which content and local history resources will be presented by area museum staff, living history groups and scholars. An evening program at each site will bring together educators and local history providers to engage in discussions of serving each other.
The James Agee Film Project, Johnson City
This grant supports the production costs for a one hour film entitled Paradigms, Pilgrims, and Power, which is part one in a series of six that tells the story of religion in American, from pre-contact Native America up to the present. The series is largely chronological, and the first part covers 1491-1697, including Native American religious life through the first two centuries of Spanish, French, and English settlement and mission work. The segment also introduces African slave religions, Muslims, and Jewish Settlers.
Youth Speaks, Nashville
The 21st Century Poet Project will introduce 750 high school and middle school students in Davidson, Rutherford, and Montgomery counties to spoken word poetry through ten, half-day residencies by the nation's leading poet educators/performers. These top presenters will cultivate the next generation of poets by engaging youth in the evolving language, linguistics and literature of this art form.
Knox County Public Library, Knoxville
This grant provides support for the 5th Annual Children's Festival of Reading at World's Fair Park in Knoxville. This multi-faceted event, which is free and open to the public, is designed to excite children about reading by featuring numerous children's authors and illustrators for presentations, readings, and book signings. The 2009 event, which took place on May 30th, featured Anna Dewdney, Allan Wolf, Bobby Norfolk, and Dean Pitchford.
