Dred Scott and the Origins of American Citizenship

Promise Land Community Club, Charlotte, Tennessee

The public is invited to participate in a conversation facilitated by Vanderbilt University's Daniel Sharfstein about Dred Scott and the Origins of American Citizenship. This conversation focuses on questions of slavery and citizenship during the first century of American statehood. It is centered on the Supreme Court case of Dred Scott v. Sanford, but reaches back to the Declaration of Independence and forward to the 14th Amendment.

The conversation will be held at the Promise Land Community Center located in Charlotte, Tennessee on the Promise Land Historic Site, a settlement of former slaves following the Civil War. The program will be at 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 2nd.  "Free at Last," an exhibit chronicling emancipation in Tennessee and curated by MTSU's Center for Historic Preservation, will be on display at the Community Center as well.
